Jackson Hill, in the southern part of Davidson County, was the largest commercial center until the early part of the twentieth century.

Plaque text:

"Area first inhabited by Native Americans Hardaway Culture. European settlers arrived during the last half of the 16th century. Both village and township named for U.S. President Andrew Jackson, unanimous choice of local residents in 1828 National Election. Salisbury-Fayetteville Road brought trade to area in mid-1800s. Early industries included a water-powered cabinet shop. Area plundered by returning Confederate troops in 1865. Gubernatorial candidate Zebulon Vance and Thomas Settle held debate in 1876. Village reached peak of activity in the 1880s with five stores, four mills, hotel, tannery and J.W. Hatley's carding and shuttle-block factory. Declined in the early 1900s due to lack of major rail service. Last store closed in 1960. Post Office and church relocated in 1970s to Denton Farm Park, approximately 3 1/2 miles east."
