Forte costeiro quinhentista e seiscentista, para defesa e vigilância marítima, construído no reinado de D. Sebastião e depois reedificado, passando a integrar a rede de fortificação costeira desenvolvida no contexto da Restauração. Fortificação de planta irregular composta por dois meios baluartes virados a terra e traçado atenalhado virado ao mar. Integra corpo da guarda, armazéns e paiol. Arquitetura de comunicações: farolim contemporâneo, composto por lanterna pintada de vermelho sobre a muralha do forte com altura de 8m; tem sistema iluminante composto por óptica de cristal omnidireccional fixa, de luz branca e alcance luminoso de 14 milhas a uma altitude de 50 m. Apresentava guaritas e uma torre sineira. Integrava uma capela dedicada a São Miguel. Existia uma lápide com uma inscrição, possivelmente alusiva à visita de D. João IV ao forte.
