This statue of Burns was supposedly the first statue to be erected in the town of Arbroath. It was a product of the Burns Statue Fund set up by the Arbroath Burns Club. Most of the funds raised came from private donations.

It was sculpted by Scott Sutherland who also made the famous Commando Memorial at Spean Bridge. The Earl of Airlie, Lord Lieutenant of Angus, unveiled the statue in the garden area in front of Arbroath Library.

It can be easily found on the walkway to the main entrance. An inscription on the plinth reads '1759-1796'.
