Iao Valley and the volcanic rocks on its enclosing slopes illustrate the major episode of volcanism that created the western portion of the island of Maui. Erosion of the volcanic rocks has resulted in an amphitheater shaped valley.

A paved 0.6 mile walk provides a scenic viewpoint of Kuka‘emoku (?Iao Needle), an erosional feature which abruptly rises 1200 feet from the valley floor.
