The Golden Roof is considered the city's most famous symbol. Completed in 1500, the roof was decorated with 2,657 fire-gilded copper tiles for Emperor Maximilian I to mark his wedding to Bianca Maria Sforza. The Emperor and his wife used the balcony to observe festivals, tournaments, and other events that took place in the square below.

The Golden Roof museum offers dynamic exhibitions and interactive elements tell the story of this unique building and its creator, Emperor Maximilian I. Visitors also learn about the fascinating history of a city that centuries ago was richer, vibrant and urban than any other city in the heart of the Holy Roman Empire and how it paved the way for the future. It was a place where guilds and domains reigned, where city dwellers, aristocrats and beggars shaped the cityscape and where the animated celebrations were held by the light of flaming torches.

The end of the Middle Ages also had a dark side: public fires in the shadow of the golden roof, bloody battles and violent clashes. During a special activity at the museum, Emperor Maximilian's jester, "Kunz von der Rosen", guides children, young and old, on a journey through the incredible world of history. Creative games and exciting books cleverly awaken their curiosity about this exciting time.

The audioguide is included in the entrance fee (available in German, English, Italian, French, Spanish and Russian)
