"Iniciadas no último quartel do século XVIII, as obras da igreja de S. Pedro do Toural estiveram interrompidas entre 1824 e 1880. O frontão triangular da fachada foi concluído em 1884, ano em que se colocou no seu vértice a cruz pontifical (a tiara papal que aparece no brasão abaixo da cruz fora incrustado no ano anterior). A torre foi erguida no final do século XIX e ficou, para a eternidade, sem o seu par. Nas quatro faces torre, foram abertos os óculos para o relógio, que tardaria em ser lá colocado. Em 1915 chegou a haver uma subscrição pública para a sua aquisição.
