The column was designed by Martin Nyrop , who imagined two columns flanking the driveway to Rådhuspladsen from Vesterbrogade. The change from one fool to two came quite late in the course of the work on the final monument, which led to the two figures being somewhat tight on the column. It gave them the name of "stacked mackerel" in popular terms.
