A primitive building already existed around 1081. Destroyed and rebuilt at the end of the Hundred Years War, it was endowed in the fifteenth century with a powerful gatehouse entrance, flanked by two round towers and a Renaissance wing in the sixteenth century.
The castle of Jonzac, built in the rock, which rises 22 m above the Seugne, received illustrious guests such as Louis XIII, Louis XIV or Mazarin. The district of the Castle, on the mound, constituted in the 17th century the real Jonzac.
Inside the building, the main courtyard opens on the north, on the buildings of the current Hôtel-de-Ville (redeveloped in the 19th century) and, in the south, on those of the suburbs. prefecture of Jonzac.
To see also, inside the castle, the small theater Napoleon III and in the immediate vicinity the medieval alley of Champagnac. To note, nocturnal visits of the heart of city take place every Monday evening of the summer.

Une bâtisse primitive existait déjà aux environs de 1081. Détruite puis reconstruite à la fin de la guerre de Cent Ans, elle fut dotée au XVe siècle d'un puissant châtelet d'entrée, flanquée de deux tours rondes, puis d'une aile Renaissance au XVIe siècle.
Le château de Jonzac, construit à même le roc, qui s'élève à 22 m au-dessus de la Seugne, reçut d'illustres invités tels Louis XIII, Louis XIV ou Mazarin. Le quartier du Château, sur la butte, constituait au XVIIe siècle le véritable Jonzac.
A l'intérieur de l'édifice, la cour d'honneur s'ouvre, au nord, sur les bâtiments de l'actuel Hôtel-de-Ville (réaménagés au XIXe siècle) et, au sud, sur ceux de la sous-préfecture de Jonzac.
A voir également, à l'intérieur du château, le petit théâtre Napoléon III et à proximité immédiate la ruelle médiévale de Champagnac. A noter, des visites nocturnes du coeur de ville ont lieu chaque lundi soir de l'été.
