In 2007, The Royal Canadian Mint produced five 100-kilogram gold coins with a purity of 99.999%. It was certified by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's largest gold coin.

Originally intended as a showpiece to advertise the Mint's new line of 99.999% pure gold coins, collector interest soon resulted in the "minting" of 5 pieces. Unlike normally minting, the pieces were cast, then machine tooled.

The pieces in existence include this one, one in the national currency collection in Ottawa, and two in private hands. The fifth piece was stolen in early 2017 from a museum in Berlin, Germany and is missing and in all likelihood destroyed.
