Depending on the season, you will be passing Walkers, Joggers, Mountain Bikers, or even Cross-Country Skiers.
As the full trail is 12 km long, be prepared for 3 to 4 hours walk *One Way*. Or arrange a car change, or similar.
BE PREPARED:
The best months for walking in the alpine environment are November through to April, however, weather conditions can change rapidly, and snowfalls and blizzards can occur at any time of the year.
CAUTION:
The recent bushfires have damaged snow gums, which are now regenerating but dead branches are shedding with the new growth. High wind days may result in falling limbs and branches. It is not recommended to use the track on windy days. Please be aware that snakes are active during the warm months. [From the sign] And, from the left-hand side of the sign, the following 'Narration':
WUNMAN NJINDE - WELCOME
"I'm Uncle Albert Mullett, a Traditional Owner and Senior of the Gunaikurnai people.
"Walk with me on this ancient mountain pathway to learn of the past, understand the present and discover the future aspirations of the Aboriginal first peoples of the Alps.
"With respect I acknowledge my brothers, sisters and families of the many tribes that have connection to this country, in particular the Dhudhuroa and Yaitmathang people. Our ancestors, the old people, walked this traditional pathway to the high country. It is our connection to our ancestral past which continues to the present day. We haven't gone away…
"Take your time; this is a long story… thousands of years.
"GETTING READY TO GO
"This is just a 12 km snapshot, finishing at Mt hotham Alpine Village. These days the track is surfaced, and easy to follow.
"Walkers - expect to take 3-4 hours one way, a big day return.
"The old people would be intrigued that these days this is a shared trail with bike riding and cross country-skiing when it snows! Please be careful on our country, if you are on a bike travel at a safe speed and give way to walkers.
"Remember you are in the alps and the weather can change quickly without warning.
"My ancestors had possum skin coats to keep warm and dry and could gather food wherever they went.
"I just make sure I have a hat, sunscreen, a warm layer should it get cold, a coat should it rain or snow, water and a snack. I suggest you do the same."
There are signs along the way for Aboriginal culture, and Alpine heritage, with plenty of views if the weather is clear. Some emergency huts are along the way if completing this in winter. Be prepared.
