Notre-Dame church of Corme-Ecluse adopts, with an art close to perfection, a plan spread in the Romanesque Saintonge: at the single nave of two bays follows a transept whose cross under the steeple is covered with a cupola on horns.
The church, donated around 1105 by the bishop of Saintes, Ramnulphe, to the monastery of Saint-Jean-d'Angély, is the seat of a Benedictine priory.
Unique variant: only the south arm opens here on an absidiole. The heart of a bay is followed by the apse.
The walls are animated by large semicircular arches or slightly broken, inside and outside. By a subtle game of withdrawals little salient, Roman volumes hang the light with a consummate art, without being disturbed here by huge buttresses later added as is too often the case elsewhere.
Sober on the inside, the sculpture is exuberant on the outside. On the facade, the arching of the portal and the two blind arcades show a setting of foliage, fantastic animals and characters, one of which stretches from each hand a chalice to large birds.
The band under the arcature of the floor and the capitals of it are of the same vein.

L’église Notre-Dame de Corme-Ecluse adopte, avec un art proche de la perfection, un plan répandu dans la Saintonge romane : à la nef unique de deux travées fait suite un transept dont la croisée sous le clocher est couverte d’une coupole sur trompes.
L'église, donnée vers 1105 par l'évêque de Saintes, Ramnulphe, au monastère de Saint-Jean-d'Angély, est le siège d'un prieuré bénédictin.
Unique variante : seul le bras sud ouvre ici sur une absidiole. Le cœur d’une travée est suivi de l’abside.
Les murs sont animés d’amples arcades en plein cintre ou légèrement brisés, à l’intérieur comme à l’extérieur. Par un jeu subtil de retraits peu saillants, les volumes romans accrochent la lumière avec un art consommé, sans être ici perturbé par d’énormes contreforts tardivement ajoutés comme c’est trop souvent le cas ailleurs.
Sobre à l’intérieur, la sculpture est exubérante à l’extérieur. En façade les voussures du portail et des deux arcades aveugles montrent un décor de rinceaux, d’animaux fantastiques et de personnages, dont l’un tend de chaque main un calice à de grands oiseaux.
Le bandeau sous l’arcature de l’étage et les chapiteaux de celle-ci sont de la même veine.
