The village of Edzell is situated in the northern part of Angus near the foot of the eastern Grampian Mountains. Local philanthropist, Lieutenant Colonel Robert William Inglis, gifted the hall in his name to the village for use as a library in 1896.
Designed by Charles and Leslie Ower of Dundee, work began in 1897 and it was opened on July 22nd 1898, the 55th birthday of Colonel Inglis.
Situated at the southern end of Edzell on the eastern side of the High Street with the corner of Ramsay Street, it is an imposing building of red sandstone ashlar in a Scots Baronial style. On the western elevation facing the High Street is the five stage round clock tower. The fourth stage is octagonal corbelled with four clock faces on alternate sides. A stone slated octagonal pinnacled spire rises above.
The clock face is in roman numerals and contains the year '1897' with the four numbers in each corner. Bells chime every quarter hour.
The library is now used as a visitor centre with a digital display giving a history of the Inglis family background.
