Aan de razendsnelle toeristische expansie kwam met de Eerste Wereldoorlog abrupt een einde. Wegens de militair-strategische ligging tussen de havens van Zeebrugge en Oostende bouwden de Duitsers verschillende verdedigingsbatterijen op het grondgebied van Blankenberge.

At the fast-paced tourism expansion, the First World War abruptly ended. Due to the military strategic location between the ports of Zeebrugge and Ostend, the Germans built several defense batteries in Blankenberge.
