The early settlers observed antelope herds running through the area so determined that their new community would be called Cabri, the Cree word for antelope.

The community was begun in 1912, the same year as the CPR arrived and the Cabri Ferry began operating. It was incorporated as a town in 1917.

Ranchers arrived around 1895 followed by homesteaders circ 1907. Mixed farming was the best means of survival for the homesteader as they could provide food for themselves with meat, milk, eggs and a garden. The abundant grain produced in the area created a need for elevators. Cabri boasted a total of nine lined up along the railway.

Like most prairie town, Cabri had diverse ethnic groups arrive from Europe and Asia. Once in the new world, they came to Cabri by train, wagon and on foot. They came from places such as England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, France, Germany, Denmark, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, China and Japan.

Water has always been a concern. In early times, water was hauled to the farms from the river, a creek or a spring. Wells were difficult to find with good water in this heavy clay soil, commonly called gumbo. Water was hauled to town from the Kalbfleisch well south of the town by Jack Mundell and sold to each home for 5 cents a pail.

Our demographics changed when a oil field was discovered in the area in 1952. In 1957 Trans Gas Pipeline began operation and gas began to flow just west of town. Francana Minerals, known as the salt plant, opened just south of town in 1967 providing even more jobs for locals and adding new families to this community.

These people added their talents to the already active bands, clubs, churches and businesses. One of the most famous musicians born in Cabri was Bobby Gimby famed for his CANADA, the unofficial anthem for Canada`s 1967 celebration.

Cabri is situated on the migratory bird flyway. The Miry Creek area is internationally known for its water fowl diversity. A few miles away is the Cabri Regional Park which is a summer playground for locals as well as well those from away.

The museum provides a picture of the area`s past. Come visit.
