I had been unable to locate any information other than what is on the gravestone, until I received the following email:

Hi, I am fairly certain that this is John Crary III (John, John, Peter) who was born 9 March 1753 in Plainfield, Windham County, Connecticut and, according to the DAR Patriot Index, died in 1843 in Ohio. The Crary book (2004) states that he is in an unmarked grave in Finney Burying Ground, Millcreek Township, Hamilton Co., Ohio. If the picture is John III, then he is not unmarked, I suppose. He married Phebe Cary who was a fairly well known poet. They migrated to Cincinatti in 1806 along with her Cary family and the Ballard family. John was in the NY militia betwen 1776-1782, and then he and two brothers enlisted in the Vermont militia at Royalton and fought in the Battle of Saratoga as well as others. In the History of Norwich, VT Goddard and Partridge p. 89 lists John, William, and James Crary as privates in Col. Peter Olcott's company in the Revolution.
