This elevator and the adjoining 6-story milling warehouse have a history that spans almost 100 years.

The Ponca City Milling Company operation here has been closed since 1959, but stands as a monument to the industrious years of the early 1900s. The elevator was constructed in 1922-1923, and in 1924, then owners Donahoe Milling enlarged the elevator to include a flour mill which produced Robin Hood Flour. A ghost sign on the elevator still reads "Robin Hood Flour"
A Ponca City History website (
visit link) tells of its heyday and importance to the town. The site reports that " During World War II, the elevator is reported to have had a huge V for victory sign atop it. The elevator consists not just of cylindrical tanks for the storage of grain but includes an entire mechanism for the filling and emptying of the grain with headhouses and side grain dumps."
AbandonedOK.com has some great pictures of the elevator and the interior of the adjoining millhouse and warehouse. (
visit link) They indicate that the elevator is in good condition, although the adjoining 6-story building may need to be demolished for safety's sake.
