Saint Bernard of Clairvaux (1090 – 20 August 1153) was a medieval French abbot, crusade preacher and mystic and the primary reformer of the Cistercian order. He was one of the most important monks of the Cistercian order for whose propagation all over Europe he was responsible.

The Cistercian order differentiated itself from the life of the monks in the Benedictine's cloister of Cluny. In the cloisters of the Cistercians the "Regula Benedicti" of holy Benedikt of Nursia was laid out literally and ascetically. Though Bernhard is not a founder of the Cistercians, however, he was vital for the quick propagation of the order. Hence, he is revered beside three founder's abbots of the order as the biggest order saints.
Bernhard von Clairvaux was canonised in 1174. His anniversary is the 20th of August. He is the patron of the monastic appeals, the preachers and beekeepers.

The full-size basalt statue holds a cross and stands in a niche of the gate house of the old Cistercian's abbey Heisterbach. The baroque gate building of the old Cistercian's abbey Heisterbach was built in 1750 during its last period of bloom under the abbot Augustin Mengelberg (abbot from 1748 to 1763).
