The South Esk in eastern Scotland, begins high up in the Grampian Mountains, 2395 feet up at the small Loch Esk, before flowing down Glen Doll and Glen Clova. It leaves the mountains and enters the fertile Strathmore, flowing eastwards through rural country before passing the town of Brechin to its south. A few miles later, now nearly at sea level it enters the estuary of Montrose Basin for over two miles before passing through between the town of Montrose to the north and the village of Ferryden to the south and it is just beyond the harbour of Montrose and east of Ferryden where it finally reaches the sea after 50 miles.

It is best viewed from the south side where there is a good path from the former fishing village of Ferryden, leading eastwards along the river to the lighthouse at Scurdie Ness. The northern bank at Montrose is cluttered by the harbour and industry.

The parking coordinates are from a small car park at Ferryden near the end of the public road.
