FR: Une première église médiévale fut édifiée, semble-t-il, dans la ville haute de Pornic dès le Xe siècle. Une seconde sera bâtie au XIVe siècle et mise sous l'invocation Saint-Gilles. Celle-ci sera abattue au XIXe siècle pour laisser place à son emplacement à un édifice plus important. L'église Saint-Gilles actuelle date d'une époque où beaucoup d'églises dans notre région vont être construites. La décision de rebâtir l'église est intervenue en 1852. Si les travaux ont été commencés en 1864, elle ne fut entièrement achevée qu'en 1875.
Dominant la ville haute, une première église aurait été édifiée au Xe siècle, pour être remplacée à la fin du XIVe siècle par un nouvel édifice placé sous l’invocation de Saint Gilles, et mis sous l’autorité religieuse de l’abbaye de Sainte-Marie jusqu’en 1554, date à laquelle Pornic devient paroisse.
La dévotion des Templiers pour Saint-Gilles-du-Gard, un des hauts lieux de pèlerinage de la chrétienté médiévale, expliquerait vraisemblablement ce choix de patronage car les Templiers avaient des biens à Pornic.
Dans l’ancienne église auraient été retrouvés des fragments de pierres tombales ornées de la croix de cet ordre hospitalier et militaire. L’église actuelle est achevée en 1871, mais il faudra attendre 1875 pour que le son des trois nouvelles cloches se fasse entendre.
C’est vers le milieu du VIIe siècle, à Athènes, que naît Saint Gilles (Aegidius). S’illustrant par des miracles, mais fuyant la renommée, il quitte sa patrie et s’installe en Provence, où il vit en ermite dans une forêt au sud de Nîmes, avec une biche pour tout animal de compagnie. Selon la légende, la biche, poursuivie par des chasseurs, vient se réfugier à ses pieds, tandis qu’une flèche, tirée par un roi wisigoth, manque l’animal et blesse le saint à la main. Pour se faire pardonner, le roi consent à construire une abbaye dont Gilles devient le premier abbé, donnant naissance à la ville de Saint-Gilles-du-Gard.
Saint-Gilles, célébré le 1er septembre, jour de sa mort, est invoqué comme protecteur des gens de mer, des cultivateurs et des bergers.
On le représente souvent avec une biche sur la tête de laquelle repose sa main blessée.

Saint-Gilles, celebrated on September 1, the day of his death, is invoked as protector of seafarers, farmers and shepherds.
It is often represented with a doe on the head of which rests its wounded hand.
