Amherst Island is a globally significant Important Bird Area, home to some of the largest concentrations of breeding grassland birds in Canada. Being along the north shore of Lake Ontario, it is also part of a natural flyway of millions of birds each year.
The Kingston Field Naturalists owns the Martin Edwards Reserve at the east end of the Island.
According to ebird.org, 221 species of birds have been seen here. Species with 500 or more sightings, according the same website, are Greater/Lesser Scaup, Redhead (duck), Brant (goose), Bonaparte's Gull, European Starling, Double-crested Cormorant, Canada Goose, and Mallard (duck).
