This monument to De Gaulle depicts him standing in military uniform walking and making a gesture with his hands as if asking..."What's up?". The piece is signed J. Cardot...and the sculpture doesn't seem to be carved as much as an amalgamation of slabs. The tall metal pedestal is made of vertical steel panels.
De Gaulle was a veteran of WWI. As France was about to occupy France, De Gaulle was able to escape to Britain where he organized the free french forces.
After the War, he served briefly as the Prime Minister of the provisional government. He formed his own political party and became Prime Minister again in 1958. He led the effort to write a new Constitution and then became President of the new Fifth Republic. He resigned in 1969..but his legacy was recognized as France asserted its own policies without submission to US or other global demands.
