" LA 43ème BATAILLON DE TIRAILLEURS SENEGALAIS AU CHEMIN DES DAMES
Avant d’être engagé au Chemin des Dames en 1917, le 43ème Bataillon de Tirailleurs Sénégalais participa aux combats de la Bataille de Verdun en octobre 1916 et il a reçu la Croix de Guerre avec palme.
Après une période de repos, il est affecté au 1er Corps d’Armée Colonial au sein de la VIe Armée du général Mangin.
En 1917, le 43ème Bataillon de Tirailleurs Sénégalais participe à l’offensive du Chemin des Dames.
Le 16 avril 1917, lors de la seconde vague d’assaut de l’attaque de la crête d’Hurtebise, éprouvant de grosses difficultés à progresser sous les feux des mitrailleuses allemandes, le 43ème Bataillon de Tirailleurs Sénégalais gagne les abords de la ferme d’Hurtebise dont il entreprend « le nettoyage ». Mais ce bataillon est paralysé par le feu nourri des mitrailleuses allemandes. Son colonel est blessé et capturé, les cadres sont décimés et les hommes anéantis. Le 18 avril 1917, le Haut-Commandement donne l’ordre de retirer le 2ème Corps d’Armée Colonial du secteur.
Affecté à la 13ème Division d’Infanterie lors de l’offensive pour la conquête du plateau de la Malmaison le 23 octobre 1917, le 43ème Bataillon de Tirailleurs Sénégalais est cité à l’Ordre de l’Armée pour sa brillante conduite. Il venait de charger « au rythme de chants entonnés par un caporal et un tirailleur » et d’enlever les positions allemandes « dans un élan irrésistible »17. Il reçoit également la Fourragère aux couleurs du ruban de la Croix de Guerre. C’est la première unité africaine à recevoir cette distinction.
En 1918, le 43ème Bataillon de Tirailleurs Sénégalais participe à la Bataille de France.
Le 43ème Bataillon de Tirailleurs Sénégalais, se montrant fidèle à sa réputation d’unité d’élite obtient, deux autres citations à l’ordre de l’Armée, lui permettant de recevoir la Fourragère aux couleurs du ruban de la Médaille Militaire.
