The sign is of a Gaelic Cross with part of it missing.

A Gaelic Cross is a form of Christian Cross, usually of stone that has circle around the junction of the arms of the cross.

Gaelic Crosses are often carved with intricate patterns, and the painting depicts this. The top left of the cross is missing as though it has been broken as the name suggests. Since the pub is in an area known as Broken Cross there was presumably an actual Gaelic Cross on this site at some point in the past.

Below the sign it indicates that the pub was established in 1777. It stands on the bank of the Trent and Mersey Canal which also opened in 1777, so presumably the pub was opened for boatmen on the canal. Even today there are mooring facilities for boats outside the pub.
