RCAF C130 130322, tactical call-sign Boxtop 22, was tasked with a resupply mission to the remote Canadian Forces Station at Alert, NWT.

The aircraft, based at 435 Squadron Edmonton, left Thule Air Base, Greenland for the 2.5 hour flight. Shortly after receiving final landing clearance, the aircraft lost sight of the runway and crashed.

There were 16 crew and passengers on board; 4 military members perished in the crash and one later of exposure. Search and rescue crews from Gander NFLD took 30 hours to reach the crash site, hindered by the huge distance to the site, almost total darkness, extreme cold and blizzard conditions.

The marker was placed in 2016 to mark the 25th anniversary of the crash and rescue. It is composed of a bronze marker with a stylized image of C130 322 superimposed on a maple Leaf. Accompanying carvings are of the Air Command badge and a SAR Technician under parachute canopy. The marker is affixed to polished red granite with a white granite stylized "tail" on top, symbolizing the tail section of the C130.

Marker text reads:

effort was launched in blizzard conditions,
continual darkness, and through multiple attempts,

16 personnel on board, four had died in the crash
itself and one more died before help could arrive.

We remember those we lost, those who survived
and their rescuers.
