Covering an area of about 10 acres and located in the heart of the city, the Mississauga Chinese Centre contains a variety of restaurants, specialty shops and services catering to the needs of the area’s Asian community as well as tourists. Besides these commercial interests, it also contains numerous architectural and ornamental elements that reflect various aspects of Chinese cultural history.
The traditional gate pictured on the stamp, stands 43 ft. tall and is made entirely of wood. And by “entirely of wood” they mean entirely: no nails or screws were used in its construction. There is also a small pavilion reminiscent of the classical gardens found in the Jiangsu Province of China and a large replica of the nine-dragon wall from the Forbidden City in Beijing.
The stamp was one of a set of eight issued as both a booklet and a souvenir sheet commemorating Chinatown gates located throughout Canada.
