JOE. DOUGLASS. (0-4-2T) is on displays in the visitor center at the Nevada State Railroad Museum. It has been restored to its 1880’s appearance but is not operational.

The H.K. Porter Company of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania built the JOE. DOUGLASS. which was named after J.M. Douglass who owned the Dayton, Sutra & Carson Valley Railroad. The railroad’s eight miles of track served mills that processed old tailing from Gold Canyon below Virginia City, and, later ore shipped in by train from around the state. The JOE. DOUGLASS., a 0-4-2T type engine, operated on the narrow-gauge Dayton, Sutra & Carson Valley Railroad from 1882 until about 1896.

In 1900, the JOE. DOUGLASS. was sold to the Lake Arrowhead Development Co. and was shipped to the Lake Arrowhead Dam site in the San Bernardino Mountains of San Bernardino County, California. After the dam was completed in 1904, the engine set abandoned at the site until it was bought to for display at a guest ranch about 1946. In 1968 it was purchased by a collector who overtime rebuilt it to nearly operation condition, lacking only the final boiler inspection and certification. In 1994, the JOE. DOUGLASS. was acquired by the Nevada State Railroad and is now on display in the visitor center.

The JOE. DOUGLASS. is a rare artifact from the silver age of Nevada's mining and railroad history. The engine is typical of the many small industrial locomotives used in mining operations around the state and throughout the country. There are very few locomotives of this age and type still in existence anywhere.
