On 25th of November, 1834 the road tunnel of Altenahr was released for the traffic with gun salutes and in presence of the Prussian crown prince Friedrich Wilhelm. It was the first road tunnel which was built in Prussia and the only one for 30 years.
It untertraverses the "Engelsley" below the castle.
With the tunnel construction the three-kilometre-long detour through the "Langfigtal" was cancelled for carts and carriages. At that time the aim of the construction of the tunnel and "Ahrtalstrasse" was to lead the traffic into the town.
The tunnel was modified and widened a few times since then.
