"Le Jardin des Plantes a été fondé en 1593. Il devait permettre aux étudiants en médecine de se familiariser avec les plantes médicinales.
Henri IV confie à Pierre Richer de Belleval la mission de créer un jardin capable de rivaliser avec celui de Padoue.
Ce jardin prend ensuite de l'ampleur.
Malheureusement, il est ravagé lors du siège de la ville en 1622.
En 1803, c'est Pierre Marie Auguste Broussonet qui est directeur du jardin botanique de Montpellier.
Responsable de son renouveau, il y rassemble un nombre de plantes incomparable, il ordonne l’ensemble harmonieusement et y incorpore une orangerie.
En 1860, le botaniste Charles Frédéric Martins, directeur à son tour, crée une grande serre (cette belle serre a été récemment restaurée et abrite des plantes tropicales, dont beaucoup de cactées)."
