Description

EN: The basilica Saint-Just of Valcabrère is a Romanesque building of the 11th and 12th centuries. It is located on the commune of Valcabrère, in Comminges, 17 km south-west of Saint-Gaudens (department of Haute-Garonne, Occitania region, France).
It is classified as a historical monument and, under the roads of Santiago de Compostela in France, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage since 1998.

History
One kilometer east of the Notre-Dame Cathedral of Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges, the basilica is mentioned for the first time in the Book of Miracles of Saint Bertrand of Notary Vital, which suggests an occupation since Roman times . The present basilica was built in the eleventh and twelfth centuries1, and consecrated in 1200 by Bishop Raymond-Arnaud de Labarthe.
Excavations have demonstrated that the site has been occupied for a very long time. This is evidenced by the sarcophagus of the fourth century and the many ancient replenishments in the building.
Since 1840, it is classified as a historical monument.
In 1998, along with 70 other French monuments, it is listed as a UNESCO world heritage site under the "Santiago de Compostela" roads in France.

Description
Access to the basilica is made by first entering the cemetery whose entry portal, from the thirteenth century, has been listed in historical monuments since 19264.
Stones from the Roman city of Lugdunum Convenarum were used for its construction, and here and there bas-reliefs, columns and capitals from the Roman era have been reused.

The gate
The portal is surmounted by a tympanum where one can see a Christ sitting, blessing and holding a book in his left hand. It is surrounded by a mandorla which St. Mark and St. John carry; They are surrounded by the two other evangelists Matthew and Luke and surmounted by two angels. On each side of the portal are statues columns representing the deacon saint Stephen, saint Just and saint Pasteur as well as St. Helena. Above each statue, capitals relate the martyrdom of the four saints.

Bedside
The apse of the basilica consists of the apse and two apsidioles arranged on a polygonal plane with buttresses. This device generates five reductions between the two absidioles. The central apse, enclosed in a polygonal wall, is covered with a roof with cut-off sides. The bedside, due to its architecture, can not be earlier than the twelfth century.
