They have been playing golf on the links at Montrose since 1562, making it one of the earliest instances where golf was played. The links, so-called because it was land that linked the seashore to the arable land, is situated between the town and the dunes that run along the North Sea coast

There are two courses at Montrose, the Medal being the most famous and challenging, and the shorter alternative, the Broomfield.

The Broomfield is situated on flat ground and is ideal for beginners, being only 4822 yards long with a par of 66. There are six short holes and the longest hole is only 380 yards long. There are very few bunkers, although those that are there are typically deep pot bunkers. The only real trouble on the course is the gorse bushes that come into play on a few holes around the turn.

Three clubs, the Montrose Caledonia, Montrose Mercantile and Royal Montrose use the course, but it is open to the public. It is well signposted from the town.
