Flinders Chase National Park is relatively undisturbed and provides a great variety of habitats, including high quality wetlands, forested gullies, gorges, woodland plateaux, coastal cliffs, and mallee vegetation, for a diverse range of fauna. Over 440 species of native plants have been recorded including twenty-three eucalypts and over fifty species of orchids. About a dozen species of mammals are native to the Park, which is also populated with many reptilian taxa and nearly 200 species of birds (Criterion A3). About twenty plant taxa occurring in the Park are listed as endangered, nearly forty species are defined as rare. This place also provides habitat for the southern brown bandicoot (ISOODON OBESULUS), a species which is vulnerable in South Australia. The glossy black cockatoo (CALYPTORHYNCHUS LATHAMI) and bush thick knee (BURHINUS), endangered in South Australia, also occur here. The Park also supports an undescribed subspecies of the Nationally endangered western whipbird (PSOPHODES NIGROGULARIS). The subspecies is uncommon on Kangaroo Island. The area is the habitat of a further nine bird species vulnerable or rare in South Australia. These are the spotless crake (PORZANA TABUENSIS) and Baillon's crake (PORZANA PUSILLA) which are classified as rare, whilst vulnerable species are the Cape Barren goose (CEREOPSIS NOVAEHOLLANDIAE), Lewin's rail (RALLUS PECTORALIS), hooded plover (CHARADRIUS RUBRICOLLIS), painted snipe (ROSTRATULA BENGHALENSIS), Latham's snipe (GALLINAGO HARDWICKII), white-bellied sea-eagle (HALIAEETUS LEUCOGASTER), musk duck (BIZIURA LOBATA) and the Australasian bittern (BOTAURUS POICILOPTILUS). The hooded plover and Australasian bittern are also considered rare on an international scale. The Cape Barren goose, white-bellied sea-eagle and Baillon's crake breed in the wetlands. Much of the Park has high wilderness value (Criterion B.1). The Park includes the upper river catchment of the North West River and the Rocky and Breakneck River catchments which are the best examples of unaltered, pristine, river systems and plateau swamps in South Australia (Criterion D.1). A breeding colony of the New Zealand fur seal (ARCTOCEPHALUS FORSTERI), representing about 10% of the Australian population, occurs at Cape du Couedic. This fur seal is considered rare in South Australia (Criterion A. 2). A number of geological sites within the Park, are of particular significance. They include: Cape du Couedic (in particular Admirals Arch, teaching and aesthetic value (Criteria E.1 and C.1); Remarkable Rocks, one of South Australia's most famous geological features, aesthetic value (Criterion E.1); West Bay, teaching and aesthetic value (Criteria E1 and C1); and Ravine des Casoars, aesthetic value (Criterion E.1). These sites also demonstrate past and on-going geological and geomorphological phenomena (Criteria A.1 and A.2).
