This is lock number 5 on the Farmer’s flight of 13 locks in the centre of Birmingham.

The flight is at the start of the Birmingham & Fazeley canal at Cambrian Wharf in the centre of Birmingham. The locks are all single width, narrow beam locks of approximately 7’ 6” width. The flight has a total rise of 81 feet.

The canal runs 20 ½ miles from the centre of Birmingham in a north, north west direction to Whittington through 38 locks and was opened in 1789. At Whittington, the Coventry canal company took over as the previous company went bust and they continued the navigation up to Fradely junction where it meets the Trent & Mersey canal.
