A summer mural painting class at the University of North Texas College of Visual Arts and Design has spent the past five weeks painting the east and west outside walls at the natural foods market.
Professor Kate Colin has taught the summer school course for the last few years.
“Previously, the murals have been painted in the Lightwell Gallery [on the first floor of the UNT Art Building],” Colin said. “The only drawback there is that they get painted over.”
Students in the mural painting class are upper-level undergraduate students.
“We talk about formal issues in terms of color, texture, content as well as the ideas and the subjects,” Colin said. “Going beyond that, it engages with the public. You really have to consider your audience. You interact and think about that community, and it really makes them rethink their subject and approach.”
Colin, a full-time lecturer in the college, said Cupboard approached them with the idea for the murals, which depict fruit and flowers.
The students who painted the murals are: Sam Wiggins, Crawford King, Jaime Rangel, Ambergrace Navarrete, Dalton Green, Lauren Tompkins, Chris Curry, Brandon McGahey, Liz Lopez, Zyanya Rita Ribeiro, Rene Cordova, Lauren Well and India Valentin.
