Spiro Theodore Agnew, was born on November 9, 1918 in Baltimore. He graduated from Johns Hopkins University and the University of Baltimore Law School. Agnew served in both World War II and the Korean War. After his military service, he entered politics and was elected the 55th Governor of the State of Maryland in 1966. In 1968, Agnew joined Richard Nixon on the Republican Ticket and the pair defeated the democratic nominees Hubert Humphrey and Edmund Muskie. Nixon and Agnew were re-elected in 1972 but both me were forced to resign before completing their terms. Nixon for his part in the Watergate Cover up and Agnew for corruption dating back to his term as Maryland Governor. Following his resignation Agnew left politics and became successful as an international trade executive, with homes in California and Maryland. He lived quietly for 23-years after serving as the 39th Vice President and died on September 17, 1996. Spiro T. Agnew is resting in the Dulaney Memorial Garden in Timonium, Maryland.

Spiro Theodore Agnew was born on November 9, 1918 in Baltimore, Maryland. He attended Johns Hopkins University and graduated the Law School from the University of Baltimore. Agnew was Military Veteran, serving in both World War II and the Korean War. Following his military service, Agnew entered politics working as an aide for Congressman James Devereux and was appointed to the Baltimore County Zoning Board. In 1966, Agnew was elected the 55th Governor of the State Maryland. Agnew was viewed as an up and coming star in the Republican Party, he officially nominated Richard Nixon for President at the 1968 Republican National Convention. Nixon then selected him to be his vice-presidential running mate. In the 1968 election, Nixon and Agnew defeated the democratic ticket of Hubert Humphrey and Edmund Muskie. Standing for re-election in 1972, Nixon and Agnew again defeated the democratic ticket comprised of George McGovern and J. Sergeant Shriver. After being re-elected in 1972, Nixon and Agnew both became embroiled in criminal investigations; Nixon in the Watergate Cover up and Agnew faced charges of extortion, fraud, bribery and conspiracy dating to the time as Baltimore Commissioner, Governor and Vice President. Agnew pleaded no contest to a single charge of failing to report income in 1967. He became the second Vice President to resign (John C. Calhoun was the first.) Following his resignation, Agnew left politics and became an international trade executive, splitting his time between his homes in California and Maryland. He also spent time writing his memoirs and a novel titled “The Canfield Decision,” about a Vice-President who was destroyed by his own ambition. Spiro T Agnew died on September 17,1996 in Berlin, Maryland. The cause of death is listed as acute leukemia. He is resting in the Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens in Timonium, Maryland.
