The windmill at the former Bankhead Mill was believed to have been built sometime in the 18th century. It was part of an L-shaped threshing barn and was a tall tapering rubble tower.

In recent times with the mill now no longer in use and the sails having gone from the tower, the site has been converted into residential use with the tower still prominent.

The tower is 40 feet high and has a 20 foot diameter base. A projecting flagged walkway is situated halfway up and a new cap has been added to the top.

The tower is situated in the northern outskirts of the town of Forfar on Taylor Street where the best view can be obtained.
