FREn 1844, le maire du Thor adresse au Préfet une demande de subvention pour permettre à la ville d’élargir la Porte dite de Douzabas et de la surmonter d’une tour d’horloge et obtient satisfaction.
On fait appel à Jean-Félix Devaux, qui rase totalement l’ancienne porte dont l’ouverture, pas assez large, ne permet pas le passage des voitures et reconstruit l’entrée avec une largeur de 4 mètres et une hauteur de 6 m à la clé sous voûte, au dessus du cintre, figure le blason du Thor.
Cette tour-porche se termine sur un couronnement de corbeaux en machicoulis, et en léger retrait de la plateforme, un beffroi, haut de 7,70m, pour des faces de 3 et 4 m , celles du sud et du nord portant chacune un cadran.
Le mécanisme de l’horloge, venu du Jura, devait sonner les heures et les demi-heures. Il fonctionnera pour la première fois le 15 août 1846, marquant ainsi la fête votive.
Sur la terrasse supérieure, Colombe, maître serrurier d’Avignon installe une balustrade ornementale, et sur piliers, une cage bulboïde en fer forgé destinée à supporter la cloche.
En 1847, la porte de Douzabas est terminée ; la cage ou campanile s’achève sur une flèche qui culmine à près de 25 m de haut.
En 1927, pour la sécurité des piétons, on ouvre d’abord un et plus tard deux passages de chaque côté de la porte.
1958 : le vieux mécanisme à balancier est abandonné au profit d’une distribution d’heure électrique
2010 : l’escalier intérieur de la tour est restauré
2015 : les travaux de restauration du Beffroi votés et inscrits au budget vont débuter.
