William Shakespeare is the most celebrated writer in the English language. His works are still staged over 400 years after having been written. The Old Globe complex stages at least three of his works every year. Near the outdoor theater, this relief in marble depicts Shakespeare with a quill...about to write on a globe. It of course reminds one of Shakespeare's line That "All the world's a stage..."

Below the relief is another tablet which has the following quote:

"SO LONG AS MEN CAN BREATHE OR EYES CAN SEE, SO LONG LIVES THIS AND THIS GIVES LIFE TO THEE" Interestingly, the quote does not place any spaces between the words. These are the last two lines to Shakespeare's Sonnet 18 which begins "Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?"
