The memorial is a homage of Cozumel to the defenders of the nation for the 100th anniversary of the first Invasion by the United States of America (Mexican-American War of 1846 - 1848).

The Mexican–American War also known as the Mexican War, was an armed conflict between the United States of America and the United Mexican States from 1846 to 1848. It followed in the wake of the 1845 U.S. annexation of Texas, which Mexico considered part of its territory in spite of its de facto secession in the 1836 Texas Revolution.

The inscription reads:
"Cozumel Rinde homenaje a los Defensores de la Patria en el centenario de la primera Invasión Norteamericana - Septiembre 13 de 1947."

Translation: "Cozumel gives tribute to the Defenders of the Nation on the 100th anniversary of the first Invasion by the United States of America - September 13, 1947"
