DE: Bereits 1837 hatte der Bauherr Kontakt zu den Schülern des Malers Friedrich Wilhelm von Schadow – eines Sohns des Berliner Bildhauers Johann Gottfried Schadow – aufgenommen, der zu dieser Zeit Rektor an der Kunstakademie Düsseldorf war. Zu der Gruppe der Nazarener gehörten die Maler Ernst Deger, die Brüder Andreas Müller und Karl Müller sowie Franz Ittenbach. Fast zehn Jahre arbeiteten sie jeweils im Sommerhalbjahr an den umfangreichen Zyklen: 69 Bilder mit etwa 580 Figuren. Die Fresken bestehen aus den Hauptteilen: Das Leben Jesu, das Leben Mariens und das Leben des Hl. Apollinaris. Die Apsis wird dominiert von der Darstellung Jesus als Weltenrichter umgeben von Maria und Johannes dem Täufer. Unterhalb, in der Mitte, sind der Hl. Petrus und der Hl. Apollinaris, zu beiden Seiten die vier Evangelisten Matthäus, Markus, Johannes und Lukas zu sehen, über den Seitenaltären: die Muttergottes und der Hl. Josef. Es entstand ein Gesamtkunstwerk, das auch heute noch einmalig ist.

EN: As early as 1837, the builder had contact with the pupils of the painter Friedrich Wilhelm von Schadow - a son of the Berlin sculptor Johann Gottfried Schadow - who was at that time rector at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. Among the group of the Nazarenes were the painters Ernst Deger, the brothers Andreas Müller and Karl Müller as well as Franz Ittenbach. For almost ten years they worked on the extensive cycles in the summer half year: 69 pictures with about 580 figures. The frescoes consist of the main parts: the life of Jesus, the life of Mary and the life of St. Apollinaris. The apse is dominated by the representation of Jesus as a world judge surrounded by Mary and John the Baptist. Below, in the middle, are St. Peter and St. Apollinaris, on either side the four Evangelists Matthew, Mark, John, and Luke, above the side altars: the Mother Gods and St. Joseph. A whole art work was created, which is still unique today.
