A pair of leaping salmon created by part time Yorkshire artist Michael Liesener. The sculpture won a competition for an artwork to celebrate the millennium in Wetherby. The sculpture is constructed from powder coated mild steel.

The sculpture is located adjacent to a mill wheel on the site of a local mill that ground corn, and latterly cut firewood. The mill burnt down in 1944. The weir fed the mill with water and a salmon ladder was provided in 1871 on the South bank of the river for the migration of the fish up stream.

The plaque reads

“Spawning Salmon by Michael Liesener. Presented by Wetherby Arts Festival & Wetherby Town Council to commemorate the Millennium 2000.”
