This white painted pillar is situated on the top of 345 metre Kinpurnie Hill, (Kinpurney on recent maps). The hill is a mile and a half east of the village of Newtyle on the northern edge of the Sidlaw Hills and is prominent because of the tower that sits on the summit just east of the pillar, a shell of a disused observatory. The summit commands fine views, especially north over Strathmore to the mountains.
STEEPNESS: A stiff climb over the last half mile.
TERRAIN: Half a mile of road walking, then half a mile along a path through The Den, before the final half mile on short grass following a faint path to the summit.
ACCESSIBILITY: The Newtyle Path Network have constructed a well signposted route from the village. The car park on the eastern edge of Newtyle is the usual start and the minor road that heads east out of the village is followed until reaching Denend Farm where the path up through The Den is signposted.
NAVIGATION: The tower on the summit makes for an obvious landmark, but in mist, bear due west after reaching the end of the path through The Den.
DANGER: None other than traffic on the road which lacks a verge in places.
