The sign on the right hand side of the sculpture says, "Annie Moore

1877-1923

On January 1, 1892, fifteen year old Annie Moore became the first immigrant to enter the United State though the new Ellis Island Immigration Station. Ten days earlier Annie and her two brothers left County Cork, Ireland and sailed in storage class on the steamship Nevada. Their parents had come over a few years earlier. Upon arrival, she was treated by the Untied States Immigration Superintendent John Weber who gave her a ten dollar gold coin to commemorate the occasion.

Annie married Joseph Augustus Schayer in 1895 and died at age 47 from a brain aneurism. She is burred with several of her children in Calvary Cemetery in Queens County, New York City."
