Das Haus wurde im Jahr 1530 vermutlich von einem Johann Crevin, dessen Wappen im Giebel abgebildet ist, erbaut. Der Name des Hauses geht auf die Familie Crüwell zurück, die das Haus 1813 erwarb und darin eine Rauchtabakfabrik einrichtete.
Während mehrerer Bombenangriffe zwischen 1941 und 1944 wurde das Gebäude stark zerstört. Nur die Außenfassade blieb erhalten. Das Gebäude wurde wieder aufgebaut. Der Giebel wurde zuletzt 2005 restauriert. Im Jahr 2011 wurde das Crüwell-Haus zum schönsten Bauwerk der Stadt gewählt.
Besonders auffällig am Giebel sind die drei mit Glasfenstern und Holztüren verschlossene Speichergeschosse, welche vom vierten offenen Giebelgeschoss gekrönt werden. Das offene Giebelgeschoss weißt Maßwerkfenster auf. Die einzelnen Speichergeschosse werden von maßwerkverzierten Blenden eingefasst.

The house was built in 1530 probably by a Johann Crevin, whose coat of arms is depicted in the gable. The name of the house dates back to the family Crüwell, who acquired the house in 1813 and set up a smokehouse factory.
During several bombings between 1941 and 1944 the building was heavily destroyed. Only the outer facade remained intact. The building was rebuilt. The gable was last restored in 2005. In 2011, the Crüwell-House was voted the most beautiful building in the city of Bielefeld.
The three storage floors, which are closed with glass windows and wooden doors, are crowned by the fourth open gable floor. The open gable floor has tracery windows. The individual storefronts are enclosed by tailor-made bezels.
