Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox - Eau Clair, WI, USA - Epic Beings and Creatures on Waymarking.com

The stories of Paul Bunyan swirled around logging camps for years before the first written account was published in the Duluth News Tribune newspaper out of Duluth, Minnesota in 1904. Six years later the Paul would once again appear in print in the J.E. Rockwell book 'Some Lumberjack Myths'. Many stories surround the myth and legend of Paul Bunion including that he single handedly cleared millions of timber lands in North Dakota in the Year of the Blue Snow. It was also said that the mess stove that was needed to prepare Paul's food was so large that they attached hams to the chef's feet and have him skate up and down to grease it. Of course there was his faithful blue ox Babe who was named by William B Laughead who wrote a children's adaptation of Paul.

In Eau Claire, just off of East Half Moon Drive, you can visit Paul and Babe as they welcome you in the upper park of Carson Park. Sitting just outside of the Paul Bunyan Logging Camp Museum, this Paul was a fixture for years in front of the museum until September 2002 saw Paul had fallen to the elements. Worn and deteriorated, a local firefighter volunteered to work on repairing the original fiberglass statue. It took him a year to fix, strengthen and replace Paul into his original spot next to Babe. Today they await the visitors to the museum which is opened from 1 May to 30 September 7 days a week.
