"The University of North Florida’s Student Wellness Complex was recently ranked as one of the Top 10 buildings in the 2015 AIA Florida People’s Choice Award Competition at the American Institute of Architects Florida Convention.

The competition, which featured architecturally impactful buildings across the state, drew more than 550,000 votes from 120 countries on five continents. The Student Wellness Complex, located across from the Student Union and adjacent to the UNF Arena, was ranked No. 7 for the most popular design and is the only Jacksonville building in the Top 10.

“We’re thrilled to have been voted as the No. 7 facility in Florida,” said Zak Ovadia, director of UNF Campus Planning, Design and Construction. “It’s an honor to be among the buildings recognized by AIA as the top buildings that have beneficially added to the unique architectural fabric of the University and Jacksonville.”

The 75,000-square-foot LEED®-Gold building is the largest, most comprehensive wellness center in Northeast Florida. With three stories of recreation space, the $19.5 million facility displays the integration of wellness programs and student recreation, including a 34-foot rock climbing wall and an elevated jogging track on the third level that circumnavigates the perimeter of the building and offers incredible views of the campus landscape.

The Dottie Dorion Fitness Center is located on the second level and boasts 27,000 square feet of fitness floor space with state-of-the-art fitness equipment. The Dr. Paul Shirley Assessment Center also offers students immediate access to personal fitness and nutritional assessments.

The ranking of this building joins a growing list of accolades, including an Award of Merit given by AIA Orlando, an Excellence in Design Award given by AIA Central Illinois and recognition from American School & University magazine for Outstanding Athletic Facility Design. The building was also featured in Athletic Business magazine’s Architectural Showcase. Dewberry provided planning and programming services, along with architectural and interior design services as part of a joint venture with Borrelli + Partners.
