In Petersham, within the Harvard Forest, is Sanderson's Farm Natural History Trail, a self guided trail with signs along the way.

The trail starts at the Fisher Museum. This museum is on Prospect Hill Road, which is off Mass. Route 32, south of Mass. Route 2 and north of the center of Petersham.

In front of the Fisher Museum is a little box that has copies of several trails that the public can walk on. The Sanderson Farm Natural History Trail is one of them. A copy of the trail map can also be downloaded from their web site.

From the museum, the trail goes up a road by the laboratory buildings on the right and to the start of the pastures on the left. From there, the trail continues to follow a dirt trail, then turns right into the woods, then right again and continues in the woods. The trail turns back to the buildings and ends on the other side of them. Along the way are metal signs with a particular lesson about the landscape at this point. Often the signs discuss past land use that still is visible, changes in forest communities, and other subjects related to forestry.

This is an easy walk with some elevation - most people of average physical condition can complete this easily.
