On January 7th, 1875 a fire ripped through Sparta, WI destroying multiple buildings including ones which were at 132-136 North Water Street. Later in that year, investors John Moffat (Feed and flour store owner), H.A. Palmer (Owner of Palmer Drug Store), and Mrs. H. Robinson (owner of a confectionary store) came together to build the Union Block at this location. This Italianate style building has a projecting iron cornice where it is written "Union Block" and the year "1875". The first businesses to call the building home were C. Blakeslee and Co. Dry Goods, R.S. Ellis Confectionary, and Lottie Lender, Millinery and Dressmaker. Over the early years several more businesses moved in and out. 1894 - J.J. Mason's Dry Goods (they remained up to and possibly after 1916) and William E. Newman's Grocery. In 1904 O.F. Angle Millinery joined the building. In 1916 it also mentioned that this building housed A. Bercu's Dry Good Store and R. Baldwin's Hardware. J.J. Mason's was the only business to last a long time in the building.

Today the Union Block houses and attorney office and an insurance office.
