1922 MODEL - T
The first fire truck to serve the citizens of Southport, NC.
The arrival of the Model - T Fire Truck by rail car in 1922 marked the first motorized Fire Engine in Brunswick County. This truck replaced a 1916 Model hand drawn hose cart.
This truck has no pump, but is equpped with two tanks that can discharge about 50 gallons of water using a soda-acid reaction. The truck carried several smaller soda-acid fire extinguishers as well as hoses that connected to the municipal water system. The Model - T stayed in service until 1948/49.
The members of the Southport Fire Department held aggressive fund raisers to completely restore this truck. In 1991/92 the Creason Motor Company of Charlotte, NC completed the project using 95% original parts.
Today. the truck is used for special events, parades, and fire fighter funerals. The Southport Fire Department is very proud of have its first motorized fire truck in operation today. It servies as a symbol of the department's years of history and service.
