The coats of arms of its namesake, HRH Albert Victor Christian Edward, the Duke of Clarence and Avondale, stands over the Praed Street entrance to the Clarence Memorial Wing of St Mary's Hospital.

When he died in 1892, HRH Albert Victor Christian Edward, Duke of Clarence & Avondale, was third in line for the British throne, behind his father, Albert Edward the Prince of Wales (the future King George V) and his grandmother, the reigning Queen Victoria.

A nearby dedication plaque for the Clarence Memorial Wing is behind a wrought-iron fence nearby. It reads as follows:
