Hexenbuche "Krus Boch" bei Hilberath - Exceptional Trees on Waymarking.com

An einem Wanderweg bei Hilberath steht die "Hexenbuche", im Volksmund auch "Krus Boch" genannt.
Die ca. 120 Jahre alte Buche hat einen Stammumfang von ca. 4,40m und gilt wegen ihres Wuchses als eine Laune der Natur. Im Verhältnis zu ihrem Alter ist die Buche mit ihren zwölf Metern nicht sonderlich hoch, dafür ist ihre Verästelung für eine Buche sehr bizarr und ausladend. Die meisten Äste und Zweige wachsen zur Seite, einige neigen sich bis auf zwei bis drei Meter zur Erde.

Wegen der stark verflochtenen Äste, die einem Hexenbesen ähneln, erhielt sie ihren Namen. Ursache für diesen Wuchs ist wahrscheinlich ein Bakterium, das besondere Pflanzenhormone produziert. Diese sorgen für ein unregelmäßiges, krankhaftes Auswachsen sämtlicher Knospen.

EN: On a trail near Hilberath you find the "Hexenbuche" (hag-beech). The beech shows a grotesque shaped treeing. The reason seems to be a bacterium which release a strange kind of hormones.
The treeing is reminiscent of a witches broom.
